1. State Funding - State funding is out of the control of the local district. Education of the inequities within the state formula needs to be continually provided to the citizens of the district.
2. Campus Safety - Campus safety is ever changing and it is important to stay on top of the best practices to keep our students and staff as safe as possible.
3. Illegal Drug Use - Illegal drug use needs to be prevented to have a healthy lifestyle. I support drug testing for students involved in extra-curricular activities. This gives the student a way out from peer pressure as well as making the student more attractive to potential employers with a drug free history on their resume.
I have a desire to be a good board member and willingness to take the time to research issues, attend professional development opportunities, and listen. I have a diverse background, having worked in both trades and administration. I have been a union member and understand the union process when dealing with contract issues. And, I am a parent and my children are graduates of the district.
State testing and graduation requirements are a controversial topic. The goal is to provide the same education in each district throughout the State. The process is cumbersome and not perfect and the requirements are changed too often. There is merit to the concept, although it needs to be streamlined to be more effective.
I am a member of the Montgomery County/Warren County Business Advisory Council which works with area employers to understand the local needs and create ways to fill the positions with local graduates. The goal is for every graduate to have a clear path either to a 4 year college, 2 year college, or sustainable employment upon graduation. This involves educating parents about opportunities instead of college that earn a living wage, and engaging the students before high school with opportunities that match their aptitude.
I feel that our district is very deliberate in spending and is fiscally responsible, not overspending or underspending.
Student and staff safety is a constant concern. Our district is doing a good job of staying on top of current safety procedures and processes. The district works with a school resource officer and local law enforcement, making students and staff aware of what to do in case of emergency. I was also involved in the development of PROJECT GUNLOCK to protect our youth with safe firearm storage.
I would like to see empathy being taught at an early age. This would help when working in groups, with work success, and relationships.
Finance also needs a broader scope in the high school level, to provide our students with an understandin of basic banking, borrowing and investing processes.
Students that connect with teachers improve academically. Staff education on the importance of connecting with students would benefit everyone.
I would increase the number of counselors to work with our students. This addition would give more time to ensure students are picking an appropriate path for after graduation, and taking the classes that are needed for the desired pathway. One-on-one meetings between a student and counselor could occur more frequent. This would help with academic and social/emotional well being.
I am active in the Ohio School Board Association and have earned a lifetime Master Board Member Award, along with 6 consecutive Awards of Achievement. I am a contributing member of Waynesville Way promoting the 40 developmental assets for the best growth opportunity for our youth. Start identifying childrens skill sets in middle school. Twice a year encourage a student to explore carreers that fir that. Eliminate creer days and get students in internships jr/sr year high school.

Maintaining our academic excellence in the face of continued district growth, ever decreasing funding from the State of Ohio and the threat of drugs coming into the district. Waynesville has been insulted from much of the rapid growth that has affected most of Warren county, but it is coming. We need to start planning now for the future, that means Better communication with the township and village governments, and planning today for the requirements of tomorrow, and that needs to happen with the understanding that new funding from the State isn't coming. Being proactive rather than reactive in our approach to growth is the key to being prepared. We also need to focus on the protection of our youth from the drug crisis going on. This means better detection devices on campus and counciling programs at earlier ages to inform children of the dangers.
I am involved with the school and the programs happening there. I'm not just on campus for the school board meetings, but for a number of events and activities. I am President of the Waynesville Athletic Boosters and work closely with the administration on athletic needs, I have been working with the theatre program for the past 35 years and very involved with the arts programs in the high school. I worked with the professional development of the teachers at all grade levels in introducing 40 developmental assets efforts into the district.
Do we send too much time "teaching to the test?" Of course. Is there a better way to for the State to accurately assess the effectiveness of School districts across the state? Probably not.
Its important for all schools to recognize that the traditional four year college isn't the only path for graduating seniors and we need to assure high school students find the correct path for them. Aside from the four year college track, 2 year college, Vocation education, Military and straight to work are all paths that students may pursue.

Waynesville does a lot, but of course they could do more. Protection of our students from threat, drugs and bullying could always be increased. Support the installation of vape and noise detectors (bullying) in private areas of the school, and products like GlueBoard to give students an anonymous way to report incidents.

I am part of an ongoing program at Waynesville Schools and throughout the community to implement a program based on the 40 developmental assets. The program, we call The Waynesville Way, is focused on providing a common language of support for youth and identifying programs that can help students in emotional and social development. The theory is that students with access to more of the developmental assets will do better academically and socially and be less prone to being involved with at risk activities.
Waynesville is a highly successful and academically high perming school. If we had the budget to increase the number of resources available to the students, we would be best served with supporting both our special needs students, who lost some resource hours this past year, when we reallocated some of our administrative staff and our gifted students program. We have a teacher with a few periods a day to dedicate to gifted, but its not enough.
I am active volunteer in the community serving as President of the Waynesville Athletic Boosters, leading the effort to upgrade the athletic facilities and bring a digital record board to the high school. As Technical Director of the High School Theatre program, he has been involved in the production of dozens of plays and musicals since 1983, working with six different directors, at Waynesville High School and is looking forward to the new fine arts facility. He also volunteers to run the timing equipment for all home track meets.
As a community member, he has attended School board meetings for the past two years, has been involved with the design evaluation of the new elementary school and fine arts center by participating in the visits to area schools to evaluate the aspects that should be included in our design.
